Abstract
This position paper highlights the role of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in aviation’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact. SAF, derived from renewable sources like biofuels and e-fuels, is a drop-in solution compatible with existing engines and infrastructure, making it a practical alternative to conventional jet fuel.
From a pilot’s perspective, ensuring the safety and operational integrity of SAF is paramount. Pilots must be confident that SAF meets or exceeds the stringent safety and quality standards of conventional fuels. Transparency in the supply chain, traceability, and clear communication about any operational differences are critical. While SAF typically mirrors conventional fuels in performance, pilots need to be informed if SAF use could introduce limitations or differences.
