Abstract
This paper examines the operational and safety considerations of Runway Starter Extensions (RSEs), which provide additional take-off distance where full runway width cannot be achieved. It highlights the need for consistent global standards covering width, surface strength, markings, and lighting, supported by risk assessments addressing visibility and runway conditions. IFALPA advocates that all take-off and landing surfaces, including RSEs, meet equivalent safety and performance specifications to ensure uniform operational integrity.
