Pilot Participation in Safety Risk Assessments

Sep 12, 2024

Abstract

This paper advocates for the inclusion of pilot safety advocates in the Safety Risk Assessment (SRA) process, emphasizing the need for their frontline operational expertise in ensuring comprehensive and effective safety analysis. While ICAO Annex 19 and the Safety Management Manual outline the importance of conducting risk assessments, many airline safety departments exclude pilot associations, leading to potentially biased outcomes. IFALPA argues that incorporating these advocates fosters trust, transparency, and a stronger safety culture, resulting in improved risk mitigation, operational procedures, and collaboration.
