Fire Risk from Lithium Batteries in Airport Vehicles

Jan 02, 2025

Abstract

As more airports adopt electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations to meet carbon-neutral goals, the risk of lithium battery fires in these vehicles becomes a growing concern. While EVs are designed to safety standards and are less likely to catch fire than traditional combustion engine vehicles, the intensity and difficulty of extinguishing lithium battery fires presents significant challenges. This paper highlights the need for airport authorities, rescue and fire services, and ground service providers to address the risk of uncontained lithium battery fires in their risk assessments. It calls for the development of specialized procedures, training, and equipment to mitigate these fire risks and ensure airport safety.
