Compromising Safety with Security Procedures

Dec 07, 2016

Abstract

It has been brought to IFALPA’s attention that some airports and authorities have been asking airlines to implement specific operational procedures that may degrade safety as mitigating measures for known security threats to aircraft, such as MANPADS or gunfire. Examples include performing take-offs and landings with all lights off, or switching off the weather radar.

If a particular airfield or airspace is considered dangerous to the point that it requires special operational procedures, the Federation believes that all operations to that airfield or airspace should be discontinued immediately unless such measures can be implemented without degrading safety.
